History of studyassociation Heeren XVII

Heeren XVII was founded on the first of april 1965 in café 'Onder de Linden' in Wageningen as studyassociation of the former study 'Landbouwtechniek' (Agricultural Engineering). The purpose of the study association was on the one hand to keep the students in touch with eachother and on the other hand to improve the contact with the proffessors and staff. The name of the association is chosen because of the fact that when Heeren XVII was founded only men were studing 'Landbouwtechniek'. Futhermore, in 1965 'Landbouwtechniek' was the seventeenth study in Wageningen.

The name Heeren XVII also points to the succesfull executive board of the "Dutch East Indian Company", which gathered under the same name during the Golden Ages. The Heeren XVII had to coordinate the activities of the Company and execute the outlines of the policy. They gathered three times a year for a few weeks. This was synchronised with the departure or arrival of the fleets. The most important gathering was in september, after arrival of the fleet. The lawyer, the secretary of the Heeren XVII, answered the mail, documented the decisions of the Heeren XVII and attended the gateherings. Because the lawyer often served for several years, in contrast to the other members of Heeren XVII, he was an importand key in the chain of the Company (source: www.vocsite.nl).

When making the sixt Agritechnical almanac I discoverd a problem. Earlier almanacs and other sources provided different data for the founding of the study Agricultural Engineering. The years 1958, 1960 and 1956 were mentioned. If the year 1965 was for real, this means that the study this year would be 40 years old. This asked for investigation. I asked the departments Agritechnics and Agrifysica (nowadays, 2014, the chair groups Farm Technology Groud and Biomass Refinery and Process Dynamics) but they couldn't give me the answer. Finally, I went to the Post- and archiveservice of the agricultural university (anno 2014 Wageningen UR). Where Caroline van de Bent helped me with my search. On thursday 15 february 1996 I spent a few hours in the archieve where I found the following:

The program of the study-year 1957-1958 contains the first documentation of study XVII, Agriculture mechanics. Stated is that op 19 july 1956 by Royal Decree that among other things the study XVII, Agriculture mechanics is added. The professor in 1957-1958 was (since 1951) prof.ir. G. Riemer (in 1981 prof.ir. G. Riemer passed away).

In the guide of the Agricultural College 1970-1971 is stated that the name of the study is changed into "N-32 Agricultural Engineering". After that the name of the study changes many times, but also the code and the length of the study change multiple times. See the tabel below for an overview.

The first graduates:
J.M. Lange on 01-07-1961
C. Bremer on 13-04-1962
R.K. Elema on 28-09-1962

From the studentdata 1950-1960 part II, see table above, appears that in study-year 1956-1957 already two students were studing study XVII. Therefore the year of founding for the study is 1956. The founding date is 19 july 1956, the date of the Royal Decree.
